Con: Will the $399 40GB PS3 turn the tide?

Sales will improve a little, but it won't turn the tide
Sounds like a desperate move to try and take out as much as possible, while leaving the absolute minimum to make it play PS3 games. The 40GB hard drive I can understand, but leaving only 2 USB ports? Thst doesn't make any sense. The USB ports probably cost them pennies to add. And no backwards compatability? That also makes no sense because they have already written the code for software backwards compatability on the 80GB model, how much money does it take to put those files on the new ... [read more]

Wii Fit can't be 4-player
The problem is there can't be any 4 player games (at least not split screen) using the Wii Balance Board because of bluetooth's maximum connection capacity of 7. You could have 3 players (3 pads and 3 wiimotes) but it will most likely be 2 because 3 is such an odd number. The only other hope is they will have 4+ player online but we haven't seen much of the online right now so that's still up in the air. These have potential but the lack of 4 player games really puts a damper ... [read more]

Sony is forcing a high-end system in to the mass market
Sorry Sony, but it doesn't work that way. Many loyal PS3 developers are beginning to think they've backed the wrong horse, that will mean fewer games for PS3, eventually it means top tier titles will start to migrate over to the system that everybody owns. Or to use your own car analogy which is more lucrative: Making after-market parts for the few thousands Ferrari's in the world or the several million Chevy's?
The PS3 is looking more and more like a niche market ... [read more]

New screenshots, not so good
I really hope those screenshots are extremely work-in-progress, or something went seriously wrong with transferring them from one format to another. We've been promised the game would look much better than the original and go way beyond the visuals of Halo 2, but those looks possibly worse than the original Metroid Prime. Now I know graphics isn't all that matters in a game and that the original MP really did look very nice, but we consumers should never be ... [read more]

Generational Games
There are those classics that are usually good no matter what system they are on (Mario, Zelda, Final Fantasy, Metal Gear, Halo...hopefully, Elder Scrolls, etc). Then there are those games that are the hotness in one generation, and then suddenly nobody cares (or cares much less than before).
It'sa me too!
If we start with the NES, when gaming was still in its infancy, there ... [read more]

VT massacre not caused by video games
When will main stream media stop covering morons like Jack Thompson, who blame video games for all of society's ills. The shooter was a very disturbed individual who took it upon himself to go and kill many innocent people. Video games did not make this maniac go on a killing spree.
The killer was a loner who wrote violent and disturbing essays for a writing class. He got in trouble twice for stalking girls on ... [read more]

More proof of the Wii's momentum
The Wii outsold the PS3 almost 2:1 during January. With many people not being able to find Wiis even today and PS3s sitting on the shelf, I can only conclude that the Wii is in much better shape than the PS3.
Like what I said in my previous arguments is that momentum is the big killer in the console race. Once a system has that big momentum behind it, nothing can stop the train. Even the PS2, with all its initial problems and ... [read more]

Momentum is everything in the console race
In the video game world, momentum is everything. I agree it has been too early to call the Wii the winner of the next-gen console race, but their momentum has been staggering. It has been the fastest selling console ever.
Now we can probably both agree that games make the system. If you were a publisher trying to determine to make a game for the PS3 (expensive, long development with a low install base) or for the Wii (cheaper to make, takes less time, more people have the console), ... [read more]

Con: Will PS3 beat Wii in the long run?

Sorry, but in the video game world, momentum is everything
First off you may want to check your facts, because the Wii IS backwards compatible with Gamecube games, and you can play old school NES, SNES, N64, Genesis, and TG-16 games through the Virtual Console. I don't care that the Wii cannot play DVDs, I already have 3 DVD players (not to mention my computer and laptop).

Why would Gamestop have a deal unless PS3's are sitting there
Gamestop has been notoriously lowering the value of trade-ins as they gobble up their competitors. So, why would they give you $100 towards a PS3 when you trade in an old PS2 unless the next-gen system is rotting on the shelves?
Gamestop doesn't make money on the PS3 (nor does any retailer). The only way Gamestop can make a profit is selling games and accessories. They can only do this if people own the system. So, Gamestop seems to need to encourage people to purchase the PS3. They ... [read more]

Even Sony realizes they screwed up
Sony made the shocking move of replacing Playstation Chief, Ken Kutaragi because of PS3 delays and poor sales of the PSP. I say it's about time. Hopefully, Sony hasn't waited too long and will be able to salvage the PS3 situation.
Kutaragi, being the father of the Playstation, spared no cost in creating his crowning achievement, the Playstation 3. This is a great idea in theory, but not so in the business world. All the money he spent creating the technology behind the Cell ... [read more]

Sorry, your next-gen console is in another castle
Adding to the previous reports that Best Buy's shipments have been cut in half are the confirmed reports that Gamestop PS3 reserve customers are not guaranteed on launch day, as their shipments have also been cut.
Contacting my store manager friend, his store's allocation got cut in half (from 16 to 8) and many other stores in the area had similar cuts. The $100 deposit that people put down still gets them a system, just not at launch. Half of the people at said store will have to ... [read more]

Sony to cut launch numbers again?!?
Two high profile sources have said that initial shipments of PS3 will be cut in half, one from EA and one from Best Buy. If true, Sony will only have 200,000 systems for the US launch, which is even less than 360 had. Sorry, but it looks like your reservation is no longer guaranteed.
This is another hit against the Sony machine. Even though they know they will sell every last console they send out, Sony cannot produce enough this year. The initial shipment is quite crucial to the ... [read more]

False rumors of no Gamecube version go wild
People like to speculate when something happens in a retailer's computer system. But most of the time, these are even entry errors by the company, or means something totally different.
Gamestop computers reportedly had the Gamecube version of Zelda Twilight Princess taken out of them for preorders. Everybody jumped the gun and assumed the game was canceled, but nonone ever thought that maybe Gamestop ran out of preorders. People always think the worst when they are speculating.

The next generation is already here
The Xbox 360 has been out for almost a year, and will have been out longer than a year when the PS3 comes out. We were all assuming that that extra year would make the PS3 look astonishingly better than the Xbox 360, but, as TGS is showing us, they in fact look worse.
According to reports and videos, the frame rate is awful and the images don't even look as good as the mediocre games on the Xbox 360. This is only 2 months before release folks! If they can't show good games now, there is ... [read more]

Free hand sword fighting
What is sure to be the best game of all time, just keeps getting better and better. Nintendo has now shown that Zelda: Twilight Princess now uses free hand sword fighting for the Wii. Now you can swing the wiimote to use the sword, instead of just pushing A. This brings a new realism to the game that is supposedly over 70 hours long(That's freakin' huge!). I can't wait to play this instant classic when the Wii comes out. I will totally be at a gamestop at midnight picking up my system, and then ... [read more]
