Sorry, still not a fad

Was the d-pad a fad? How about the analog stick? Rumble? Shoulder buttons? Nope. All these were made or popularized by Nintendo and they are now all standard features on most controllers. How about the DS touch-screen? Many people were screaming `FAD` and we all know how that turned out. The Wii control scheme is just another evolution in controller design and will most likely become standard in the future.

The only way it’s going to be a fad is if developers actually stop using ... [read more]

Pro: Xbox 360 Warranty Extension

It was good business sense to extend the warranty

Very few companies do the "right thing" and Microsoft is not one of them. Microsoft is doing the thing that makes the most business sense, which is to own up to the design flaw to prevent their sizable XBOX investment from going down the toilet.

Think about it. If Microsoft continued to deny the problem for another year, likely a very large percentage of XBOX's would fail. Just to guesstimate a number... 50% (reasonable I suppose if 100% on the market are defective). ... [read more]

Pro: WiiWare

Nintendo's brilliant strategy

I think that Nintendo's strategy is brilliant. They are gradually introducing the Wii as a real console platform by trickling features in as the software is developed. The Wii is selling like hotcakes even still, and when things slow down a bit all Nintendo needs to rejuvenate hardware sales is introduce a new aspect to the Wii platform. This way all the new features are thoroughly enjoyed and not forgotten between dozens of features.

Online multiplayer? A few more people want to ... [read more]

Pro: Nintendo Wii

Making money on a console isn't such a bad idea

In the past year Nintendo has made $2.5 million profit for each of their employees. Why should we care? Because that money that others are losing on the hardware comes from somewhere. What sort of incentive does a large corporation have to provided great support, develop lots of killer titles for, and continue improving upon what they've released, when they are starting off in the red?

On the other side, Nintendo, who is making ... [read more]

Pro: Nintendo Wii

Exactly

The mass market wants simple products at a good price (ex: iPod, Wii, DS). The $600 Sony is asking for the PS3 is not within the means of most consumers. I know Sony will lower the price eventually, but PS2 started out at $300 and the sub-$200 price came pretty quickly. The price drops for the PS3 will take a while to become what seems to be the best market price of $250.

Hardcore gamers will see better value in the Xbox 360 with ... [read more]

Better Graphics No Longer Matter

“We're starting to see in the performance of the PS3 and Xbox 360 that that's not necessarily motivating the market the way it used to.” - Nintendo of America Senior Vice President of Marketing George Harrison.

I kind of agree with that statement, the more complex a game (or sequel) gets, the longer and more costly it is to develop. For example, it could take about 4 years per sequel on a high-powered console ... [read more]

Let's Put The 'Wii Novelty' Argument To Rest

There are people out there who believe that the Wii is a novelty that it will 'wear off' in the near future. Sounds to me like the same kind of people who thought the DS novelty will wear off. The Wii has changed the way we interact with games and there is no going back.

Let's compare the points between the portable race and the console race.

Monolith RPGs for Wii

Nintendo recently bought enough stock in Monolith to have control over the company. Monolith is known for Baten Katos on the Gamecube and Xenosaga on the PS2. This is good news for Wii gamers that want to see RPGs on the Wii.

Wii owners can now be assured that at least some RPG games will be coming to the Wii. On the flip-side, I'm sure this is disappointing news to Xenosaga fans who have always played their games on Sony ... [read more]

Pro: Super Paper Mario

Must have title

I have had more fun with this game than any other title this year. My wife and I love to play together passing off the Wiimote between levels and trying to figure out the puzzles together. This title is a definite must buy for Wii owners.

I was a little skeptical of the 2-D & 3-D switching idea when I read about it, but the interesting puzzles that come about because of it are awesome. The art style is very interesting and ... [read more]

Pro: Nights: Journey of Dreams

Unique features have peaked my interest

Third-party titles on the Wii have been lacking in the unique features category, which was the same with the first year of the DS, but now it looks like Sega might be the first to venture into uncharted territory on the Wii.

Since Madden used real world weather (which I was quite impressed that EA came up with that idea), there hasn't been much use of the Forecast Channel, even by Nintendo. But now Sega is looking to use it to ... [read more]
