This is what we wanted
It's funny, I remember the days when everyone wanted all the non-gamers to come and play. You know, play games with your girlfriend, or what have you.
Apparently, what they really meant is that they want their girlfriends to play God of War or Killzone with them. Now that it's clear that "bringing in the non-gamers" means making games like Nintendogs, Wii Sports and Wii Fit, they're suddenly pissed that they're sharing this space.
Non-gamers, as a general rule, are never ever going to want to play a game called "Killzone." Even forgetting gameplay for a second, could that name possibly scream "testosterone driven teenage male fantasy" more? No, it could not, and it's only one example -- a symbol -- of the types of games we play. We are not going to get non-gamers to play games with this stuff, period.
If we're going to actually include people -- and I hope we can agree that including people who aren't 20 year old males is a good thing -- then we need to make games that don't focus entirely on guns, swords, or cars.
Shooting, slicing, killing, and racing. Guns, swords, and cars, guns swords and cars, guns swords and cars, over and over again. These are the typical young-male toys, and I want you to think, just for a second, how few games there are on the PS3/360 that don't have some combination of those three things -- guns, swords, and cars.
