Pro: Video Game Sequels

Sequels are what people want

You can't necessarily fault developer's for not bringing newer ideas to market at least commercially. The decisions to fund a project come from publishers for the most part. With the usual costs of developing a game commercially being as high as they are, the publishers don't want to take that risk, hence, the wave after wave of clones. Occasionally you will find someone that takes a risk, but there aren't enough publishers willing to do that.
On the other hand, while I hate that there aren't many innovative games out there, I can't necessarily fault the publisher either. Bottom line is they are a business and are doing what anyone that wants to make money would do. They are following the money. If you had a choice of either making an almost guaranteed x amount of money in profits off something that is popular with consumers or taking a risk and possibly losing x amount of money, more than likely you'll go for the former.
Ultimately, it's in the consumer's hands where the money goes. If people want innovation, then they should put off buying Halo 15 or whatever franchise is out there, and buy the lesser known and more innovative games.
