What If Each System Takes A Territory?

The current video game race has been quite a trip. A year ago many people thought Nintendo was done for, Microsoft didn't have a chance in trying to topple Sony, and Sony was on the road to making the best selling system ever. Now we have a truly epic battle from the big three for each territory, and it may end up with each system getting one.

Microsoft's best advantage has been their year lead on Sony and their continual efforts to get more games on the Xbox 360. Microsoft currently owns North America with almost 6 millions units. However, the Xbox 360 hasn't fared too well in other territories. Their sales haven't been bad, just nothing to get a stranglehold on any other territory. Japan hasn't been very good to Microsoft, but the 360 sales haven been better than their previous system, so at least that's something.

Everyone thought Sony owned the home video game market in Japan, but the Wii has been a resounding success, far exceeding anyone's expectations. Nintendo currently rules Japan with the Wii and DS with sales of 2 million and 16 million respectively. It even looks as if Nintendo will hold that lead for the foreseeable future with the Top 3 weekly sales charts consistently are DS, Wii, and PSP.

Europe happens to be the wild card this time around. With emerging markets across the continent, no one was sure how big video games would be this time around. Sony has beaten the anti-PS3 machine that has been raging on the internet with 500,000 units sold in Europe in just 2 days. There are reports that the PS3 is easy to get, but they must have flooded the market with them if a half-million were sold.

If each company can keep the moment in their respective successful territories, we may have a popular system for each market. This creates an interesting issue for game developers, which usually port games from market to market on the same system. I know it's early in the race, and their's a chance the Wii could over-take the 360 in North America. And I know only 2 days of sales for the PS3 in Europe don't prove much, but this is going to be a very exciting few years.
