Wii drought during Q2?
Don't be so sure. Remember Nintendo is under a strict information embargo due to the pending stock trade. Almost all of the upcoming games they talked about, we already knew were coming. Miyamoto was able to let a snippet fly about a Mii voting channel, but I'm sure Nintendo has much more up their sleeve.
The stock trade in Japan has heavy implications for the Nintendo corporation, so they cannot divulge new information that would change the price of the stock drastically. The Nintendo executives have made the choice to restrict new information until after the stock transfer in complete (which hopefully will be later this month). I know the recent lack of surprising news from Nintendo at GDC has the internet a-blaze with talk of a Q2 Wii drought, but I wouldn't jump to that conclusion just yet.
The game line-up that was announced is a little weak in terms of number of titles, but there are some killer games coming out. I'm not saying there will be more titles announced for that time frame, but I believe there will be something else during Q2.
I believe Nintendo was ready to announce the addition of downloadable originals to the Wii Shop Channel at GDC before the information embargo was put in place. I still feel that those original titles could launch during Q2, which would be a good reason to have a light game line-up. Also, Nintendo was not able to announce how the online gaming would work in the US. All they were able to announce on that front was that Pokemon Battle Revolution would be the first title to support online play (which we already knew).
So, don't listen to the internet media telling us that Nintendo is going to have some dry Q2 months when Nintendo was not able to give us the full story. At least wait until April, which hopefully will be far enough after the stock trade for Nintendo to tell us what is coming.
