That's right they had 2 series, Nintendo had 30 years of characters, plus those of other franchises and many of the characters that could have been put in where not included (such as Toad for example) so that's not really an excuse not to have more characters in it. I don't know the exact reason why some were left out, but it's just a suggestion to include more characters, they could have done this via DLC.
