Pro: Nintendo Wii

Once publishers figure out how to make great Wii games, watch out

The DS had a less than stellar line-up at launch, and was gobbled up by loyal Nintendo fans. But once 3rd party publishers, and even Nintendo themselves figured out how to really use the system's functionality, sales went through the roof. If you think the Wii is cool now, just wait for the titles that come out during holiday 2007.

The DS had a learning curve for developers because Nintendo changed the dynamic of the controls and added another screen. It took game-makers a while to figure out how people would use the device and what types of control schemes were most liked. The DS also opened doors for new types of gameplay, but most publishers would not risk developing these new types of games without knowing if the system would succeed. Now that Nintendo has proven that they can sell a new control scheme, 3rd parties will jump on board the Wii with new types of games much faster than with the DS.

The Wii is capable of all kinds of new control schemes, most probably haven't been thought of yet. The first wave of Wii games were mostly adapted from old controls, just as the first generation of DS games. But now, as time goes on, publishers will figure out what works and what does not. They will have a full year with the system for the games that will grace the system at the end of 2007. If you think you've seen what they Wii can do, you ain't seen nothing yet.
