Pro: Game of the Year 2006

Final Fantasy XII
A lot of people have been waiting for this game, and for a long time, even longer than the new Zelda game. It has been delayed for years and finally it was released this October. And boy, was the wait worth it.
FFXII completely throws out the tedious, annoying, and boring aspects of console RPGs and improves and improvises on everything people love about them. It is the most revolutionary game in this genre in many many years. It creates a hybrid between the real time battles of online RPGs and the turn based battles seen in classic RPGs. It gives players the deepest possible character customization. And best of all it gives us the much-needed, yet optional Gambit system that takes away all the annoying and tiresome commands in RPGs (like heal when HP gets below a certain point, or remove this status effect).
FFXII is probably the single most gameplay focused RPG ever created. I have never had so much fun playing an RPG (starting back in 1991) or a Final Fantasy game. It is also the longest FF game to date.
FFXII's story shifts from a character-driven story, filled with cliches like a troubled teenager who finds romance, discovers his destiny and saves the world, to an event driven story about political intrigue and war, filled with assassinations, betrayals, deceit, suicide and murder. FFXII is easily the darkest FF game yet and its gripping tale does not let go.
Visually, FFXII is the single most impressive game on a 6th generation console. Extremely detailed character models roam in gorgeous locales. The draw distance is tremendous. FFXII pushes the PS2 the farthest it can possibly go.
FFXII deserves to be the GotY because of it's great contributions to RPG gameplay and resetting the standards for great RPGs. Many people thought Final Fantasy was doomed after playing FFX or FFX-2, but FFXII has surely revived the franchise and genre.
