Sorry, still not a fad

Was the d-pad a fad? How about the analog stick? Rumble? Shoulder buttons? Nope. All these were made or popularized by Nintendo and they are now all standard features on most controllers. How about the DS touch-screen? Many people were screaming `FAD` and we all know how that turned out. The Wii control scheme is just another evolution in controller design and will most likely become standard in the future.

The only way it’s going to be a fad is if developers actually stop using the controllers for their games. It almost seems like they want it to just be a fad just so they can wash their hands of it. Guess what, a lack of support will inevitably do that to any peripheral. Why do you think motion controls, web cams, dance mats, etc. had such a hard time getting through mainstream, let a lone as video game standards like game pads and mouse/keyboards. That’s what made Nintendo’s move a big plus in pushing touch screens, motion sensors, and pointers beyond mere side projects. Remember that Konami game with the sunlight sensor, that’s what’s going to happen if you don’t support a system.

But then that’s what these guys and many developers want, isn’t it? They want the Wii to fail, never mind the pitfalls of what the 360 and PS3 are doing. We can have PS3 level specs in a few years in an even smaller, cheaper package, but instead we’d like nothing more than to push technology so far so fast to keep up with the PC Joneses that we’re being put in a position to pay huge premiums for it. It’s not like Nintendo supporters don’t want stuff like High Def, large storage, blazing graphics, etc., it’s just that there has to be a balance with power and price. It’s getting a little bit unreasonable, and with that you’re going to sacrifice widespread use.

All these talk of not having software is just about a smoke and mirrors as saying games like MGS4, Assassin’s Creed, Eternal Sonata, etc. can’t be on the Wii. They can be. All these excuses about better graphics, AI, physics, etc. are all baloney. We had those last gen too and this is so because you people praised it to be so. So now you’re going to make excuses like it wasn’t there and that the Wii couldn’t possibly have games with all those things. You bought PS2s for crying out loud. And it’s never been more clear that there’s a bias against the Wii when you people brush of that NOW it’s not about sales numbers and that it’s better for developers to focus resources for the 360, PS3 and PC and port the same games among them because apparently it’s now three against one when we talk about userbase.

How convenient.
