I just ordered the US 60GB version of the PS3 due to this switch. I think BC was a pretty big plus for the PS3. Look at the 360, BC only through an emulator. That's garbage! Their emulator doesn't even support a major amount of the original XBOX games. If you have a really obscure game that didn't rate high, chances are the emulator won't work for it.
I hope you're right when it comes to returning BC on future units. But with the PS2 sales saturating the market, there's a pretty good chance that most gamers out there (even the MS fanboys/girls) have a PS2 at their disposal.
Time will tell I suppose...
