Con: Will the $399 40GB PS3 turn the tide?

Sales will improve a little, but it won't turn the tide

Sounds like a desperate move to try and take out as much as possible, while leaving the absolute minimum to make it play PS3 games. The 40GB hard drive I can understand, but leaving only 2 USB ports? Thst doesn't make any sense. The USB ports probably cost them pennies to add. And no backwards compatability? That also makes no sense because they have already written the code for software backwards compatability on the 80GB model, how much money does it take to put those files on the new 40GB hard drive?

Some people will go for it. Sales will improve a little, but it won't be enough to gain ground on the Xbox 360 or Wii. I guess if you think a little bit more long term, this model will probably be the first one to reach $199, which will make the system available to the mass market. And by that time enough PS3 games will be available so backwards compatabilty will be less important.

Sony used to be all about how their system was far superior to the 360 in backwards compatability because it was hardware based. Then they changed it to software based (less PS2 and PS1 games worked) and now none of the old games will work. Guess they will do anything to get themselves out of third place and minimize their losses.
