Con: Wiimote damage Nintendo's fault?

Absolutely not!
Just as if a baseball manufacturer would not be liable if you threw a baseball at your TV, Nintendo holds no accountability for the damage people do with the Wiimote. And many of the pictures I've seen are quite suspect and are probably fabricated by scam artists looking for a quick buck.
My friends and I have played many heated Wii Sports and other Wii games that we used too much force in playing, but none of us have ever let go of the Wiimote. Even if someone were have the controller slip, you'd have to actually let go of the controller at an incredible force to break the wrist-strap. I doubt the strap ever broke when the controller just slipped. People probably were playing without the wrist-strap on, broke their TV and thought if they made it look like the strap broke, Nintendo would have to buy them a new TV.
I applaud Nintendo for creating stronger wrist-straps, but I'm sure they did lots of testing before shipping out the final products. But the one thing they didn't count on were con-artists who would try to make some cash at anyone's expense.
